Hap­py Bir­th­day: 110 Years Stu­dio Babelsberg

On Febru­ary 12, 2022, Stu­dio Babels­berg cele­bra­ted its 110th anni­ver­sa­ry and we at Media­Tech Hub Pots­dam cele­bra­te the oldest film stu­dio in the world.

Film histo­ry was writ­ten in Babels­berg and today the stu­dio con­ti­nues to set stan­dards in the pro­duc­tion of Ger­man and inter­na­tio­nal films and series. Thanks to sta­te-of-the-art stu­dio and pro­duc­tion tech­no­lo­gies, Babels­berg is reco­gni­zed world­wi­de as a dri­ver of inno­va­ti­on in the field of film production.

In the last 20 years, Stu­dio Babels­berg pro­duc­tions recei­ved 48 nomi­na­ti­ons at the Aca­de­my Awards and were award­ed a total of 15 Oscars in various cate­go­ries. GRAND BUDA­PEST HOTEL won four of them, as well as THE PIA­NIST, THE FAKE, THE PRE­VIOUS REA­DER and BRIDGE OF SPIES.

As a cen­tral part of the Babels­berg media loca­ti­on and the Media­Tech Hub Pots­dam, the stu­dio is always a pio­neer for new tech­no­lo­gi­cal deve­lo­p­ments. In 2018, for exam­p­le, the Volu­cap, the first volu­metric stu­dio on the Euro­pean main­land, is being built with the par­ti­ci­pa­ti­on of Stu­dio Babels­berg. The cir­cu­lar stu­dio, equip­ped with 32 high-reso­lu­ti­on came­ras, enables inno­va­ti­ve VR and AR pro­jects. In 2021, the DARK BAY Vir­tu­al Pro­duc­tion Stu­dio will open on the site, a col­la­bo­ra­ti­on bet­ween DARK WAYS and Stu­dio Babels­berg. It is one of the lar­gest, per­ma­nent­ly instal­led LED stu­di­os for vir­tu­al film pro­duc­tions in Euro­pe. Ins­tead of the pre­vious green/​blue screen pro­cess, digi­tal back­grounds can now be crea­ted in advan­ce as a 3D world and dis­play­ed on the LED wall in real time for film­ing. The Net­flix series 1899 is the first pro­ject to be rea­li­zed here.
